A Note From Dr. Justice

The CDC’s ACIP committee recently announced the recommendation to separate MMR and VZV vaccines at the 12 month visit due to an increased risk of fever and febrile seizure. At Just Us Kid’s Pediatrics, we have always followed this plan due to concerns for these potential side effects which is very worrisome for a parent if it occurs.  There is no danger in combining MMR and VZV and the combo vaccine is given at the 4 year well check to decrease the trauma of getting vaccines at age 4. Studies have not shown this side effect to occur in 4 year olds. The immune system at age 1-2  is less mature and more sensitive to stimulation from vaccines. A fever is a sign of the immune system reacting well. Please be reassured that we are always an advocate for your child and want to offer the best care possible.
